Newton & Kelly: Government working to protect older people during cold weather

Junior Minister Robin Newton MLA and Junior Minister Gerry Kelly MLA have said that it is essential that Government does all in its powers to protect older people during the current cold weather.
Mr Newton said: "The unprecedented weather conditions pose a particular challenge to older people in our community. I would urge everyone to look out for older neighbours, relatives and friends not just during the current period of cold weather but also after the thaw.
"The situation is being continually monitored and the Emergency Planning Co-ordinating Officers within each district council along with OFMDFM and other departments and statutory agencies are in daily contact."
Mr Kelly said: "Central and local government have a co-ordinated response to what is an evolving situation and retain the ability to escalate that response should the conditions on the ground deteriorate. The situation is being kept under constant review in the coming days.
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who are currently working against the elements as the Christmas holiday period begins. The entire community appreciates all that is being done on their behalf."
